Microdeal was a British software company which operated during the 1980s and early 1990s from its base at Truro Road in the town of St Austell, Cornwall. The company, founded by John Symes was one of the major producers of games and other software for the 8-bit home computers of the time, in particular the Dragon 32 and the similar Tandy TRS-80 Color Computer ("CoCo").

The 8-bit software market dwindled toward the end of the 1980s and Symes officially announced that Microdeal would no longer publish for the Dragon and Tandy machines on 1 January 1988; from this point they would concentrate on the newer generation of 16-bit computers, the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST, with their remaining stock of Dragon and Tandy software to be sold off by a company called Computape. The companies publishing licences were sold to Hi-Soft and it ceased trading in the early 1990s.

Activities
Some of Microdeal's software was produced in-house by the company's own programmers (including Steve Bak, Rita Jay and Ed Scio) but they also licensed software from foreign sources, such as the American Tom Mix Software and Spectral Associates, and published the works of independent programmers (notably Ken Kalish who was responsible for some of their most successful titles). Much of the software brought to Britain from the US was originally written for the Tandy CoCo (which was the more popular machine there) and converted to work with the Dragon. These conversions were contracted out to a company called Northern Software Consultants where they were handled by lead programmer Chas Robertson. Chas also designed the dongle device that was experimentally used for copy protection of a single Microdeal title, Buzzard Bait. Some of Microdeal's licenced games were renamed for the British market. For example, they released a series of games based around the company mascot Cuthbert (Cuthbert Goes Digging, Cuthbert in the Jungle, etc). The original members of this series were written in-house by Steve Bak, but later additions were completely unrelated. Rather, they were renamed titles from several different sources - the graphical limitations of computers at that time meant that a character was unrecognisable and could be given any convenient name. Microdeal also had a brand called Pocket Money Software, which published simpler games submitted by users at a lower price than the main titles. While some Pocket Money games were arguably of poor quality, others were among the company's most popular titles.

Microdeal also sold Cuthbert-branded blank media (tapes, disks, etc), re-boxed and sometimes adapted hardware (such as joysticks) made by other companies and published an occasional semi-informative, semi-promotional magazine called The Cuthbert Chronicle. They also accounted for most of the advertising space and reviews of Dragon User magazine.

John Symes the founder of Microdeal now runs a car dealership in Bournemouth .
The Seiddab (look at it twice and you'll get the joke) are on the rampage on the planet, and you have been sent out to stop them in your trusty tank. With a full 3D view, you must first take them on in the cities, shooting 10 down to face the leading man. A scanner is provided to give you a view of which streets the Seiddab lurk on, allowing you to steer left and right to reach them, as well as adjusting your sights to take them down.

Once cleared, you move onto an open-plan countryside area, with more units coming towards you, and they now drop bombs towards you, putting your 3 lives at a greater premium.
The war on the Seiddab rages on, and you now take part in an attack on their moon base. You fly a hovercraft a bit above the moon's surface, and must shoot down the enemy's DAB tanks. After that ring of defense is penetrated, you must dodge your way through a space minefield above a mountain range, and then a missile firing range before reach the Seiddab's command base.

Unlike the prequel 3D Seiddab Attack, you are now flying, and can make more adventurous maneuvers.
The first game to star the evil Seiddab, 3D Space Wars gives exactly what the title promises. As soon as you warp into outer space, your cockpit screen is filled with alien spaceships which must be shot down, for you are mankind's last hope, armed with the Earth's only remaining battle spaceship.

Gameplay is arcade-oriented, with few cockpit gauges and displays to keep in mind. The three cockpit instruments are your radar, speed readout and fuel meter. You run out of fuel when you fire your phasors and when you are hit by enemy fire. You can replenish your fuel by docking with the fuel station which comes into view from time to time. Once all Seiddab spacecraft in the area are destroyed, you warp into the next zone.
This is a remake of the classic arcade game Missile Command. Your goal is to protect a number of outposts from total destruction by inbound missiles, mines and bombs. You can fire your gun anywhere in the sky to create explosions in the path of the missiles to destroy them before they hit their target. As the game progresses, the inbound missiles move faster and other dangers make their appearance. Your have a limited supply of ammunition, so you may have to choose to target only those missiles that represent a threat to your remaining outposts.

At the end of each attack wave, you are awarded bonus points for remaining outposts and unspent ammo. An extra outpost is awarded when you pass 10000 points.

This game needs an analogue joystick.
The Dragon Data version of the classic Space Invaders game. You control your ship at the bottom of the screen and battle the invading aliens marching across the screen. You can move sideways and fire at the invaders. There are three defenses that you can hide behind, but they will quickly get shot to pieces by the invaders, or maybe your own firing. From time to time, an UFO will fly across the top of the screen. Shoot it for extra points.

This is a remake of the coin-op classic Donkey Kong for the Dragon. This is a classic platforms game played over four main levels.

The barrels: This is the first level. Our hero must climb a number of platforms and ladders to rescue his girlfriend abducted by The King, a giant gorilla. The gorilla throws barrels down the platforms, which you have to evade in various ways, usually by jumping over them or smashing them with the hammer.

The Pins: Climb the platforms and remove the eight pins supporting the structure. Once all pins are removed, The King will fall down. Collect bonus items for extra points, but avoid the fireballs roaming the structure. Once again, use the hammer to smash the fireballs if they get too much in the way.

Elevators: Climb even more platforms and ladders while avoiding fireballs and jumping springs. This level introduces a number of constantly moving elevators.

Conveyors: The final level introduces moving conveyor belts carrying deadly cement pans and more fireballs.

When one level has been mastered, more difficult versions of previous levels must be replayed before you are admitted to the next level.

The game can be played at normal or slow speed. It is also possible to play in practice mode. In this mode you will start the game with 12 lives, but you will not be able to enter your name in the high score table. Useful when practicing the high levels.

The game was first released with the name Donkey King. The name was changed to The King when Microdeal faced accusations of infringing on the original Donkey Kong series. (See Dragon User June 1983 for more details.)
Dragon User - September 1985
Screaming Abdabs, A & F Software, Canal Side Estate, Woodbine Street East, Rochdale OL16 5LB. Price £6.90.

If A & F Software continue at this rate they could very easily become a top Dragon software house. First, the excellent Chuckie Egg, and now this superb Manic Miner clone.

The Manic Miner type of game is one of my favourites thus giving this game a distinct advantage. However, even those who mock this software breed will not be able to deny that this is en excellently designed end executed game.

As has been said, it's a Miner clone, consisting of 35 very complex screens, each more challenging then you are at first led to expect, and to negotiate these screens you get five lives plus a bonus life at 5,000 points.

There is an option for keyboard or joystick, one to four players, and, although undocumented, pressing "c" changes the colour set.

There is a pause facility but for some inexplicable reason it seems not to work when playing the game in keyboard mode.

The most interesting feature built into the game is the "Randomize" mode which, when selected, will pick any of the 35 screens, at random, for the players enjoyment (!)

The graphics are superb; if the screen looks cluttered at times it is due to the complexity of the game.

This game not only features moving and collapsing platforms, it also has electric walls, transporters, moving beams (a la Donkey Kong Jnr), switches, and the usual run of everyday objects turned mutant (we have screws, televisions, no toilets - sadly - and scissors to name but a few) but they move in two dimensions - they move up and and down as well as left and right.

The unclear instructions do not tell you that you have to collect all the food on a given screen before you can collect the key and finish the screen; rather they imply that you can collect the key at any time.

This game, apart from the very small niggles above, is faultless. lt looks good (even the loading is great once you realise that the computer is not actually crashing - it's meant to load that way!). And what's more it plays fairly which means no collisions are registered unless they actually take place on screen (regular players of Jet Set Willy will know what I mean) and plays very well.

This is yet another one for the collection - unless, of course, you hate Manic Miner. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

As Hen-House Harry, the player must collect the twelve eggs positioned in each level, until a countdown timer reaches zero. In addition there are piles of seed which may be collected to increase points and stop the countdown timer for a while, but will otherwise be eaten by hens that patrol the level. If the player touches a hen or falls through a gap in the bottom of the level, he loses a life. Each level is made of solid platforms, ladders and occasionally lift platforms that constantly move upwards but upon leaving the top of the screen will reappear at the bottom.

Eight levels are defined and are played initially under the watch of a giant caged duck. Upon completion of all eight the levels are played again without hens, but now pursued by the freed duck who is not affected by the positioning of platforms. A second completion of all eight levels yields a third play through with both hens and the duck. A fourth pass introduces additional hens. Finally, a fifth pass has the duck and additional hens moving at a greater speed. If the player completes all forty levels then they advance to 'level 41' which is in fact exactly the same as level 33.

The player starts with five lives, but an extra life is awarded every 10,000 points.
Dragon User - July 1984
A firm that is better known for its BBC software is A & F Software. Like Microdeal, they have apparently decided to diversify, and have included the Dragon in their list of micros. Chuckie Egg has an unusual setting - a farmyard. The object of the game is to obtain as many eggs as you can while avoiding strange creatures that seem to inhabit the farm. The display consists of several levels connected by ladders. The eggs, along with small piles of corn are lying on the ground. As you make your way around the farmyard, you can pick up the eggs and gain points. There are some rather mean-looking ducklings wandering about the screen just waiting to pounce on you, as well as a malevolent duck in a cage at the corner of the display. According to the program notes this is capable of producing mayhem in the peaceful farmyard, but it has yet to do anything unpleasant to me!

Up to four people can play at the same time, and the scores are clearly shown on the display, as is a clock, quietly ticking away. When you have collected all the eggs on one screen, the display scrolls smoothly upwards, and you are faced with yet another section of the farmyard with slightly more complex surroundings. The game is very well written, and the difficulty levels are nicely gauged to allow steady progress through the different stages. There is a list of the top eight scores at the end, as well as the opportunity to redefine the control keys. If A & F Software can produce more programs like this for the Dragon, it will be no bad thing. This has to be my favourite program this month.
Beanstalker, which takes its background story from the old tale of Jack and the beanstalk, boils down to nothing more than a clone of Loderunner, but still manages to take with it some of the spirit of the programmer's earlier works in the shape of the detailed animation of the small sprites, and the different screens are also much more varied than the original Loderunner.

Still, it plays exactly like Loderunner, with a small man running around ladders and platforms to pick up various items. Once all items are picked up a ladder to the next level is introduced. The screen is guarded by nasties such as mice, worms or spiders, which vary according to the level. They can be stopped in their path by digging a hole in the ground for them to fall into.

The game features 60 screens, runs in monochrome high resolution and has a (password-protected) level editor.
Burger Time clearly influenced this manic arcade action game, in which your task is to make burgers, by collecting the 4 core components in sequence. Chasing you as you do this are two sausages and eggs, contact with which costing you a life. You are armed with a pepper spray, which paralyzes them for a few seconds, but this is limited to five uses per level. When you touch the burger pieces, they drop, and can be used as weapons to stop the pursuing foods. The arrangement of platforms features many ladders, which you must use to chase and dodge the respective ingredients.
This is the Dragon version of Donkey Kong Junior, the follow up to Donkey Kong. (Released for the Dragon as The King.)
In this game you control Junior who is trying to rescue his gorilla father from Luigi. Junior must navigate platforms, climb ropes
and chains and jump to get to his father, all while avoiding crocs, birds and other enemies. The only "weapon" at Junior's disposal is fruit, which can be dropped on enemies to kill them and to score some extra points.

The game is played over four levels:
# Avoid the crocs by climbing the ropes and navigating the platforms.
# Free your father by pushing all keys into their locks while avoiding crocs and birds. Note that it is possible to both climb faster and push two keys simultaneously by being positioned just right.
# Use the moving chains and platforms to get to the top, but avoid those birds.
# Luigi's secret hideout. Use the ropes and platforms to get to the top while avoiding lots of enemies.

When a level is completed, Junior will have to tackle previous levels again (only slightly harder) before he can move on to the next level.

The game provides a practice mode that makes Junior invincible to enemies, but he can still fall to his death.
